We’ve been flooded with frameworks:
Trauma-informed care. Motivational Interviewing. Housing First. DEI. Harm Reduction. Radical Candor. TBRI.
Every few years, a new concept breaks through the noise and dominates:
· Social service conferences
· Funding priorities
· Staff trainings
· Strategic plans
These frameworks trend like clickbait.
They generate momentum, conversation, and dollars.
And then?
They fizzle.
Despite all the investment, there’s one thing we rarely see: actual improvement.
Why Isn’t Anything Getting Better?
We say we’ve adopted the model.
We put it in the grant.
We add it to our website.
We check the training box.
But:
· Youth aren’t getting more stable
· Families aren’t more functional
· Trust in the nonprofit sector keeps declining
Why?
Because we’re adopting frameworks in word only.
Not in practice.
We’ve confused informational literacy with transformational literacy.
And the field is paying the price.
What That Looks Like in Real Life
Programs say they use Motivational Interviewing, but:
· Staff still give advice instead of asking questions
· They use "open-ended" questions to manipulate, not explore
Agencies say they’re trauma-informed, but:
· Staff regulate clients, not themselves
· Leaders reward compliance over development
Organizations say they’ve adopted Housing First, but:
· They abandon accountability
· They skip structure, support, and social learning, the very things that make housing sustainable
It’s all optics.
It’s performative adoption.
And it creates a loop:
· A new framework emerges
· Funders rush to reward it
· Providers rebrand to stay in the game
· Nothing changes
· The public loses trust
· A new framework emerges
And round we go.
Here’s What We’re Really Facing
Most of the people with the power, authority, and money to solve problems are:
· Not actually practicing the approaches they promote
· Unwilling to be trained in methods that challenge their habits
· Too invested in optics to admit they don’t know what they’re doing
We’re waiting for change from people who aren’t willing to change.
And the rest of us?
We’re so used to dysfunctional systems that we:
· Avoid the hard conversations
· Placate instead of challenge
· Let “client voice” replace growth and boundaries
Even worse, we normalize emotional immaturity as mental illness, when often, it’s just underdevelopment.
Growth requires discomfort.
But discomfort isn’t allowed.
So neither is growth.
The Approaches Themselves Aren’t the Problem
Trauma-informed care, Housing First, TBRI, and Radical Candor all have value.
But none of them work in isolation.
And none of them work without skilled people who can apply them well.
At NYEP, we had to build something new.
Because:
· TBRI focused so heavily on trauma that it skipped accountability
· Radical Candor emphasized feedback, but lacked space for feelings
So we created Relational Candor:
· The pause of TBRI + the clarity of Radical Candor
· The ability to sit with discomfort and still hold standards
· A skillset that can be trained, practiced, and refined
It’s not a vibe.
It’s not a slogan.
It’s a practiced, repeatable communication model that builds trust, results, and relationships, all at once.
But it only works if:
· Staff are trained
· Approaches are practiced
· Leaders lead by example
And that’s rare.
Why People Don’t Trust Anymore
Let’s be honest:
A lot of people think nonprofits are scams.
Not because they’re anti-charity -
But because they’re not seeing progress.
They see:
· The same problems year after year
· The same leaders talking about "new initiatives"
· The same language, branding, and buzzwords - repackaged, not refined
People don’t trust systems that spend millions to make things sound better but can’t show outcomes.
Because deep down, they know:
If it worked, we’d see it.
So What Happens Now?
You can keep saying you’re trauma-informed.
You can keep submitting the same reports, hoping no one asks too many questions.
You can keep adjusting optics while wondering why the trust, and donations, aren’t coming in.
Or…
You can become the kind of program that actually works.
One that builds real trust by creating real results.
One that can look a funder, a partner, or a participant in the eye and say:
“This is how we do it. And this is how we know it works.”
Because if we want public trust back -
We need to stop selling stories.
And start showing receipts.
